Buying guide: types of interior doors

When shopping, it is easy to get lost among all types of interior doors. But knowing them well can allow you to make much better decisions! In addition to separating 2 spaces, interior doors complete the style of your home.

Interior doors, in addition to meeting aesthetic needs, also meet practical needs!

  • noise reduction

  • Privacy

  • Hide storage

  • Interior insulation

  • Decoration

They should be chosen carefully to meet your specific needs. See how the different types and styles of interior doors can influence your choice.

Types of interior doors

It is possible to classify interior doors into 4 main categories: hinged, sliding, folding and retractable. Obviously to each of these types of doors apply different styles. Read on to find out!

Hinged doors

Hinged doors

The hinged door is probably the most frequently used. Their use is very versatile. The hinges can support both standard and oversized doors. Door hinges can also be placed on either side of the door frame, to suit ergonomics.

Hinged doors are therefore a safe bet, they allow the passage from one room to another without worries.

Sliding doors

Sliding doors

Sliding doors have a very different mechanism from hinged doors. They can consist of one or more doors suspended using rollers on a rail. They open laterally.

Sliding doors allow you to save space. They are therefore ideal for small spaces!

The different varieties of rails also allow you to add a touch of style to your decor. The sliding door can become a real piece of resistance!

Folding doors

Folding doors

The mechanisms of folding doors can resemble those of sliding doors. Indeed, folding doors are also fixed on a rail. The doors are fixed with pivots in the lower and upper corners. Often used for closet doors, you'll recognize them by their center hinges that allow the door to fold in half.

Depending on the width of the frame opening, you can install one or two pairs of doors!

Pocket doors

Pocket doors

The pocket door is very similar to the sliding door. The difference ? It slides into the wall rather than out of the wall. With a simple push, it opens, making it very convenient for people who need quick access.

Once the door is opened, it is completely concealed. It can also be installed in any wall!

Hollow core and solid core

What is a hollow core door? This term often comes up when we start to be interested in the types of interior doors. The core describes the internal structure of the door.

Solid core doors can be made of solid wood, or filled with polystyrene, particleboard or laminated wood.

Hollow core doors are economical and therefore more common. The exterior is clad in wood, veneer or MDF. The core, or center of the door, is a honeycomb structure made of wood or lightweight plastic tubing. Some doors may have wooden slats on the inside which are used to support the wood siding.
